Breaking News from Windswept Farm...

Celina Says ...

Who you gonna ask about foal cams?

When the people at Windswept Farm asked me
to spec out a foal monitoring system I naturally went
looking for something with a small hoof print.

Apple's Ipod Itouch is just such creature. Some will
say I picked it just because of the name, Apple.
That seems like a natural path for criticism when
you're talking to a horse. You can cut my foal
starter, but don't take away my Apple.

A real time streaming foalcam in your shirt pocket.

Apple's Ipod Itouch combined with
webcamXP5 and a standard issue wifi access
point yields a real time wireless streaming
video surveillance and foalcam solution that
can fit in a human shirt pocket.

A special thanks and four hooves up go
to Steve Niquille at webcamXP for
closing the loop in the video
presentation layer.

Tech News from Windswept Farm...

Rascal's Farm Beat

When you're 14 inches tall being an on the
ground reporter means you're litteraly on the ground.

That being said, there isn't much that escapes my attention...

One such bit of news was the recent modernization of the
CCTV cable distribution system that supported the
monitoring of mares in the lead up to foaling.
The system has been migrated to a 100MBS  IP
based wired and wireless network with full roaming
cabability for on premise network clients.

Slow but steady...

Winter Wisdom...

It's February 14th and you're probably wondering
what I'm doing talking to you this time of year.

No, it's not about chocolate and
roses or the seven signs of aging.

Remember it's winter and things are slow,
and naturally, I'm the go to guy for slow.

All kidding aside I'm here to address the subject
of global warming and a simple way to reduce your
carbon footprint and the greenhouse gasses that
humans are releasing into the atmosphere.

I'm still looking for a picture
 so I'll describe the solution.

Basically we all know that water left
outside in the depths of winter will freeze.
Of course horses have a tough time knocking
back ten to twenty gallons of water when it's in
solid form. So you either have to heat the water
with an electric immersion heater or change the water
every few hours. Well for a hundred dollars you can
save yourself a lot of hassle and some steep hydro bills.

Locate a 45gal plastic barrel. Make sure that nothing
toxic or poisionous has ever been stored in the barrel.
If you aren't sure then don't take a chance. Purchase or
locate a cement well tile that is at about ten inches
larger in diameter than the barrel. Place the tile where
you  normally locate your water trough or bucket.
Take your barrel and cut the top of it out. Locate
some fresh manure (I know you  have some).
Place enough  manure  in the bottom of the well tile
to level it out and provide a buffer between  the barrel
and the ground. A couple of inches will do just fine.
Place the barrel in the center of the well tile and pack
fresh manure between the wall of the tile and the
plastic barrel. Fill the barrel with water.
Your problem is solved until spring.
The only requirement is that you keep the barrel
topped up each day and remove any ice that forms
on the surface of the water.  Never leave the barrel
with water in it unless you have livestock actively
drinking from it each day. It will freeze. Always remove
the ring of  ice that forms around the perimeter before
it has a chance to advance downwards.

Two canadian winters have tested
this concept and it works like a charm.

The two year old colt Color Guard by Escudo out of Freia (Federalist - Matcho) recently sold for $42,000 at the 2007 RCMP Auction on October 6, 2007.

That bid produced a new high water mark for the twelve year history of the RCMP's bi-annual sale.

Color Guard's dam Freia, gifted to the RCMP by Bill Mulholland during the opening night ceremonies of the 2000 Royal Horse Show was the offspring Windswept Farm's stallion Federalist and Elite Mare Mondäna.

Mondäna produced many quality horses as part of Windswept Farm's breeding program. The last of these was Sundance Kid, currently owned by the Mastracci's. Having ranked 2nd in his division in 2007 he will compete at the 2008 Royal Winter Fair.

Although no longer part of the Windswept Farm breeding program, Mondäna continues to produce quality foals for Alice Reese's Farm in Hillsburgh, Ontario.

Centurion  was described as being "a very modern type, showed good elasticity and much self importance".

In November 2000, during the opening night ceremonies of the Royal Horse Show, The Royal Canadian Mounted Police accepted the gift, for their breeding program, of a black Hanoverian filly, Freia, donated by Windswept Farm.  The presentation was followed by a performance of the world-renowned RCMP Musical Ride.

Freia '99
 Freia v. Federalist - E.M. Mondäna (Matcho - Diskus)

Freia WF, 18 months old, is a daughter of the stallion Federalist and the Elite Mare Mondäna by Matcho x.  Freia was bred in Canada by Windswept Farm, owner of both Federalist and E.M. Mondäna.

Windswept Farm's Montcalm, younger brother of the stallion Merlin, was Reserve Champion for 2000 of the Ontario Hunter Jumper Association  "Combined Working Hunter" division. He has been sold to a show stable in the U.S.
At the AHS inspection in July 2000 four Windswept Farm mares were admitted to the Main Studbook. Two were from Merlin's first foal crop in 1997. E.M. Mathilda by Merlin out of E.M. Frederika (Feiner Stern) earned the highest score amongst all mares inspected by the AHS during the year 2000; special attention was drawn to her walk which earned a 9.0. E.M. Mathilda is in foal to Brentano II. She is the oldest of four full sisters.
At the AHS inspection held in July 2000,the top foal selected by the judges was a grand-son of St.Pr.St. Bummy, a big chestnut colt by Sam Steele out of Willa (World Cup IV - St.Pr.St. Bummy) who impressed especially with his presence and exceptional movement.
A grand-daughter of St.Pr. St. Bummy, the two year old filly Lili, owned and bred by Windswept Farm, was Siegerstute (champion mare) of the Freiburg (Germany) Mare Show. Lili is by Lemon Park out of St.Pr.St. Wilhelmina v. Weltmeyer -  St.Pr.St. Bummy (Bolero). Lili is the oldest of these five sisters.
