Weltmeyer and Wogenspeiler were sons of World Cup I, older brother of World Cup IV and Salvano was the sire of Sherlock Holmes, father of another Windswept Farm stallion, Sam Steele. World Cup IV's dam, St.Pr.St. Sendernixe, is from the same line as Salvano and Sherlock Holmes - an old and valuable blood line which is enjoying a strong renewal. Wellesley's dam line is relatively obscure. His dam E.M. Esplanade (Eichendorff - Barsoi xx-Kurier) has, with World Cup IV, has produced nine excellent foals displaying notable consistency. Three including Wellesley, are dressage horses and one a show hunter (see "News & Notes). All, including the younger ones, show the same lightness and agility and the same trusting nature which is reflected in their trainability and rideability.

After a suprisingly unimpressive performance test score in November 1998, Wellesley began his dressage training. In June 1999, his first competition experience, he was Reserve Champion, Basic 4 open.  Two shows later he won the Ontario Senior Basic 4 Championship. 

This year  (2000) Wellesley began the show season competing at CEF Medium 1 and 2 (approximately equivalent to AHSA third level and his first foal, a bay colt, was born.
